A stick welder is primarily used for welding ferrous metals in various construction, repair, and fabrication applications. These versatile machines excel at welding in outdoor environments where wind or moisture might affect other welding processes. Stick welding isn't necessarily better than MIG, but it offers distinct advantages in certain situations. Stick welders perform better in outdoor conditions and on dirty or rusty surfaces without requiring shielding gas. The best stick welders provide deeper penetration on thick materials, while MIG typically offers cleaner welds with less slag and easier operation for beginners.

It's called stick welding because of the rod-shaped electrodes or "sticks" used in the process. The stick welder sends current through these consumable electrodes, which are coated with flux and held in a clamp while welding. When using a 220 stick welder or other models, the welding electrode resembles a stick that gradually becomes shorter as its material transfers to the weld joint.
